Man Wearing Bulletproof Vest Arrested at LAX With Smoke Grenade, Billy Clubs, Hatchet, Knives, Biohazard Suit, Body Bags & More:
A man traveling from Japan to Boston was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday after customs agents found him wearing body armor and carrying an alarming assortment of weapons and devices.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Tuesday that Boston-bound Yongda Huang Harris was arrested Friday on suspicion of transporting hazardous materials on a flight from Japan.
The 28-year-old drew suspicion when federal officers noticed he was wearing a bulletproof vest and flame retardant pants under his trench coat.
It was later discovered that the 28-year-old was traveling with a “smoke grenade, three leather-coated Billy clubs, a collapsible baton, a full-face respirator, various knives, a hatchet, body bags, a biohazard suit, handcuffs, leg irons and a device to repel dogs,” CBS Boston reports.
The affidavit says the smoke grenade falls into a category that is prohibited on board passenger aircraft by the United Nations.
Harris is a Boston resident but has been working in Japan for an undisclosed period of time. KTLA reports that the suspect is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was formerly a Chinese national.
He was expected to appear at a Los Angeles court on Tuesday.
